Public speaking is one of the most common fears that is believed to affect 75% of the population. If you’re human, there’s a higher chance than not that it will take you a bit of practice to get comfortable speaking in front of others.

However, as a real estate agent, your desire to lead your hyperlocal market and beat out the competition should be stronger than your fear of being on screen.

Real estate videos are one of the most important and efficient methods to gain visibility in your real estate market, educate your clients, and pique the interest of potential clients. High-quality videos with you in them are statistically more viewed and motivating for your viewers.

Ready to start creating videos that elevate your real estate business instantly? Here is how to film real estate videos and build the confidence to make them a success.

1. It’s Normal to Feel Nervous

It’s okay to feel nervous when your first hop in front of the camera. Your first few videos may be embarrassingly awkward, but it’s all a part of the journey.

Take a deep breath and remember that this is your content, for your business, and your clients. You are the master here; the energy you bring to the video will determine how it is perceived and whether or not viewers watch it through and through. With time, you’ll get used to seeing yourself on camera and you’ll nail down the energy you want to bring to your videos.

2. Keep Your Tools Simple

You don’t need to start with a videographer and perfect lighting. In today’s age, organic content is king and some of the most popular content creators record themselves in their pyjamas. We’re not suggesting that a professional real estate agent who is responsible for thousands of dollars worth of property wear pyjamas – but you get the point.

Most modern smartphones have cameras that are comparable to professional cameras and editing tools available within the camera app.

A few simple things you’ll need to check are:

Make sure the lighting is clear and friendly. Cast shadows and fluorescent lighting can look creepy or cold. Daylight is ideal, and a well, evenly lit space is second best. Get the lens in focus, clear the background, and get to shooting.

3. Practice a Ton

As with any skill in life, practice makes perfect. Any video or selfie veteran will tell you that getting comfortable on camera takes a few, if not dozens, of tries. The only way to get confident is by feeling as if you have full command over your content. Mastery comes with practice.

Start by recording a few videos a week. Even if you choose not to publish them, you’ll have invested your time in practicing so that you can speak confidently when you’re ready to publish. When you’re practicing, it’s not necessary to talk only about real estate content. Pick any random subject or location and improvise as if you are sharing a video with your audience.

4. Quality Video Content is King

It’s tempting to follow the path of every new trend online and rack up as many views and followers as possible. However, your awkwardness will come across on camera if you’re not being your authentic self. Plus you may end up with views and engagement from people who are not truly interested in buying a property or even learning about real estate in general.

Whether you are working on video marketing content, helpful tips, a day-in-the-life, or virtual tours, you should always feel like yourself.

As a real estate professional, your priority is to grow your overall business and relationships with the right clients. Even if you have fewer views overall or in comparison to other video creators, the high-quality viewers who convert to clients will make a big difference in your business growth.

To find the right applicable content topics, think back on your client conversations and their common questions. Additionally, search social media channels using real estate-related hashtags to see what is gaining the most traction. Do the same on popular client-facing real estate publications such as House and Home or the real estate section of your local newspaper.

5. Don’t Think of the Camera as a Camera

Speaking to a camera can be intimidating. You feel as if you are onstage and everyone in the world is your audience. The truth is that you don’t truly want to speak to anyone and everyone. A better way to look at this is to imagine that you are speaking directly to your ideal client one-on-one.

You want to catch the eye of the right person for your niche, real estate services, and business style. It’s okay if your video doesn’t resonate with everyone. It only takes one viewer to become a client, then a referral, and possibly a funnel for new ready-to-buy-or-sell clients.

If you need extra assistance, try to record with someone you’re comfortable with behind the camera. Imagine speaking directly to them and forgetting that the camera is there (but don’t get too comfortable, if you know what we mean).

6. Prepare in Advance

Before you jump in front of the camera, get an outline of what you want to discuss. If you feel comfortable only having an idea in mind and speaking from the top of your head, perfect. If you need to write down a few pointers that you can glance at throughout filming, perfect. Do what feels right for you.

Very few of us can jump on a Live Instagram, for example, without any idea of what we are going to say, and still end up putting out a content-rich video.

Have you ever started a speech or presentation and gotten lost midway only to start rambling to fill the time? Preparation can help you avoid that and keep your content succinct, focused, and rich.

7. Don’t Worry About Being Perfect

If you are waiting to be perfect before you post your first video, you won’t get ever get around to it. There’s no problem with redoing a video until you get it right, as long as you’re not being too hard on yourself.

When you’re not restricted by being perfect, you also have the freedom to be your true self in front of the camera. Go as far as to try not to be perfect and only focus on being natural and as comfortable as possible.

Wrapping Up…

Getting comfortable on camera is truly a challenge in building confidence. With any new challenge, it’s okay to be a bit nervous when starting off and develop confidence with practice. Keep your eye on the end goal of building content that connects with your clients and other stakeholders.
